Judge of the Supreme Court of Georgia
Nino Bakakuri, after practicing for 18 years as a lawyer and as a judge was elected as a justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia in October, 2014. She is currently a member of the judicial panel examining cassation appeals on civil law cases, including contract, labor, family, inheritance, commercial and corporate law disputes, disputes related to property rights and freedom of thought and freedom of expression.
Since January, 2016 she is a representative of Georgia of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) and a Member of the Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE) at Council of Europe.
Before joining the Supreme Court she served as a judge at the Administrative Law Chamber of Tbilisi Appeals Court (2004-2008), examining appeals on cases involving: acts of the President and the Ministers of Georgia; acts of the independent agencies for the regulation of communications, oil, gas, energy and other natural resources; disputes related to taxation and customs law, land law and privatization matters, investment disputes.
She was a partner at Nodia, Urumasvhili & Partners (2008-2014), Legal Expert for American Chamber of Commerce in Georgia (2011-2012), Legal Advisor of Association of Judges of Georgia (2004), deputy chairman, board member, project director, lawyer and a head of legal aid center at the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (1997-2004, 2011-2014).
She is a trainer of judges at High School of Justice of Georgia. At various times she was an Invited lecturer at the Georgian-American University School of Law, Free University School of Law, Caucasus University School of Law and Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in Georgia.
She received her LL.M. at Columbia University School of Law in New York, and is admitted to practice law in New York State.
During 2012 – 2014 she was a chair of the Banking Commission of ICC Georgia and a Board Member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry France Georgia (CCIFG) 2009-2011.
